For Win + Shift + S, the capture is copied to the clipboard first. It does not automatically save to the Screenshots folder by default. If the saved file is corrupted or opens as a black image, use this troubleshooting path:
- Confirm which capture method is being used
- Win + Shift + S opens the Snipping Tool capture flow and copies the image to the clipboard.
- If automatic file saving is expected, use Win + PrtScn instead. That method should save to Pictures\Screenshots.
- Try saving to a local folder
- Save the snip to a local folder such as Pictures instead of a cloud-synced location.
- Also verify the target drive has available space.
- Repair or reset Snipping Tool
- Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Snipping Tool.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Repair first.
- If the issue continues, select Reset.
- Note: Reset clears the app’s data.
- Check Snipping Tool save behavior
- Open Snipping Tool.
- Open Settings from the three-dot menu.
- Make sure automatically save original screenshots is turned on.
- Check notifications
- Go to Settings > System > Notifications.
- Make sure Snipping Tool notifications are enabled.
- This matters because the snip notification is part of the normal save/edit flow.
- Check for Windows updates
- Some Windows 10 updates caused Snip & Sketch to fail to capture screenshots or fail to open with Windows key + Shift + S.
- That issue was addressed in KB5014666.
- Use an alternate capture method while testing
- Use Win + PrtScn to test whether only Snipping Tool saving is affected.
- If Win + PrtScn saves correctly but Snipping Tool saves black or corrupted images, the problem is more likely isolated to the app.
If the screenshot appears correctly on the clipboard but the saved file is black or corrupted, the most relevant supported fixes are: save to a local folder, repair/reset Snipping Tool, enable automatic saving in Snipping Tool settings, and make sure Windows is fully updated.
