If this is classic Outlook on Windows, there is a known issue where drag-and-drop can stop working after certain Windows 11 version 24H2 updates.
Known cause
- The issue was reported after installing these Windows updates on Windows 11 24H2:
- KB5050094
- KB5051987
- Microsoft marked this issue as fixed in KB5052093 for Windows 11 24H2.
What to do
- Install the latest Windows updates
- Go to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- Install the latest available updates, especially if the device is on Windows 11 24H2.
- Restart the device and test drag-and-drop again.
- Apply the Outlook workaround if updates cannot be installed yet
- In Outlook, go to File > Options.
- Select the General tab.
- Under User interface options, change Optimize for compatibility to Optimize for best appearance.
- Restart Outlook and test again.
- Use a temporary alternative to move mail
- Instead of drag-and-drop, select the message and use Move on the Outlook ribbon.
- If needed, choose Other Folder from the Move menu.
- Another option is to right-click the message and use Cut/Copy, then paste it into the target folder with Ctrl+V.
If the target is a SharePoint library in a browser, the context only confirms a drag-and-drop limitation for new Outlook, not classic Outlook. For classic Outlook, the documented issue in the current context is the Windows 11 24H2 drag-and-drop problem above.
