I currently have Windows 11 home 22H2 on my new laptop. It says I need to update to the newest version of windows 11 to receive updates. How do I achieve this?

Click the Start button and open Settings.

Select Windows Update from the left or right menu.

Turn on the toggle for "Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available" if you see it.

Click Check for updates.

If a feature update is ready for you, click Download and install.

Restart your computer when the installation finishes.

There are some alternatives when the upgrade to a new version is not available on Windows Update.

However, please share a screenshot of your system information so I can see if there is anything that might be preventing the upgrade from being made available to you.

Press "Windows + R", type msinfo32 and press Enter.

Maximize the window and use the shortcut "Windows + Shift + S" to use the screenshot tool.

Also. Do you have a third-party antivirus installed? If yes, which one?

Thanks for the clarifications.

I don't see anything in your screenshot that would prevent you from upgrading to the latest version (25H2).

Try upgrading to version 25H2 by doing an In-place Upgrade using an ISO file.

It's a simple procedure, and you have the option to keep files, settings, and apps. Therefore, all your data is kept.

(Temporarily disable Avira during the entire procedure.)

Download the ISO file to perform the procedure:

Access the link below;

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11

Under "Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) for x64 devices", click "Select download" and select "Windows 11 (multi-edition ISO for x64 devices)";

Click "Confirm";

Choose the language and click on "Confirm";

Then, click "64-bit Download".

Wait for the download to finish and proceed to the procedure below.

After downloading the ISO, do the following:

Double-click the ISO to run;

(After running the ISO, you may need to double-click the "Setup" file to start the procedure.)

On the "Install Windows 11" screen, uncheck "I want to help make the installation of Windows better" and select "Change how Windows Setup downloads updates";

On the next screen, select "Not right now" and click "Next";

Accept the terms of use;

On the "Ready to install" screen, select "Choose what to keep" and select what you want to keep.

(It is in this step that you must check "Keep personal files and apps" so that all your data is kept.)

Click on "Install" and wait for the procedure to finish. Your computer may restart several times.

At the end of the procedure, your Windows 11 will be in the latest version (25H2), and some updates may already be installed. But check Windows Update to be sure.

Where did you save the .iso file? Is it on your local main drive (C:) or on an external USB flash drive/hard drive?

Did you right-click the ISO and select Mount, or did you extract/copy the files onto a USB drive first?

Also, please do the following:

Press "Windows + R", type regedit and press Enter;

Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control

Select the "Control" key in the left panel. Take a screenshot of the right panel. Then share the screenshot.

You have the PortableOperatingSystem parameter, which indicates that the system thinks it is installed on an external storage drive.

Please share a screenshot of "Disk Management":

That screenshot confirms that the hardware sees your drive as an internal NVMe drive. The error is just a false trigger because Windows has a registry setting enabled by mistake.

The next step requires a registry modification. Since modifying the registry is always a delicate procedure, I suggest creating a restore point beforehand as a precaution.

After creating the restore point, do this:

Open the Registry Editor again; ("Windows + R", type regedit, and press Enter)

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control; (Same as before)

Double-click PortableOperatingSystem in the right panel;

Change the Value data from 1 to 0 and click OK;

Restart (not shutdown) the computer so the change takes effect;

Mount the ISO file from the C: drive again and run setup.exe;

Windows 11 Home 22H2 is no longer the current release, so updating to a newer supported version is the right next step.

Use one of these supported paths:

Try Windows Update first
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- If a newer Windows 11 feature update is offered, choose Download and install.
If Windows Update does not offer the upgrade, use the Windows 11 Installation Assistant
- Go to the official Windows 11 download page and run the Windows 11 Installation Assistant.
- This is a common way to move from 22H2 to the latest supported Windows 11 version.
If needed, use Windows 11 installation media or ISO
- Download Windows 11 installation media or an ISO from Microsoft.
- Run Setup.exe from the mounted ISO or installation media to perform an in-place upgrade.
- This is generally used when Windows Update does not move the device forward.

Important notes:

If the PC is managed by an organization, the upgrade may be controlled by IT.
A full install can overwrite the contents of the hard drive, so back up files before using installation media for anything other than an in-place upgrade.
For devices moving from Windows 11 version 22H2 to 23H2, Microsoft uses an enablement package, which is a small update that turns on 23H2 features with a single restart.
