Windows activation fails after motherboard replacement

Hi, I recently updated the motherboard on my PC.

Windows 11 says the hardware has changed and gives me error 0xC004F211. It’s also showing as being in Notification mode.

I’m signed into the correct Microsoft account. I originally bought Windows as a physical retail copy, but I lost the product key sticker, but that was fine since until now, windows has been linked to my microsoft account.

I managed to recover what i think the correct key is from the old Windows installation using the DigitalProductId registry value, but it still won't activate.

running slmgr /dlv gives:

I’ve also tried slmgr /ato, which gives 0x803F7001.

I’ve tried the usual activation troubleshooting and signing into my Microsoft account, but I still can’t get it activated.

Why is my genuine retail key is being rejected after the hardware change, and is there a way to get the license working again without buying Windows again.

You cannot use the product key shown in the registry to activate windows. That key is a placeholder and not valid for activation.

When you used the activation troubleshooter did you select I changed hardware. In that process do you see a device to transfer the licence from.?

Hi

The 8HVX7 ending matches Windows Home’s generic installation key. This suggests the registry recovery returned a generic key rather than your original retail key. It cannot activate Windows by itself, even when slmgr shows “RETAIL.”

If you already tried “I changed hardware on this device recently” and selected your previous PC, I recommend contacting Microsoft Support through https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/contactus. Sign in, select Windows, and describe the activation failure after replacing your motherboard.

Explain that your digital licence was linked to your account but the original retail key sticker is lost. Have any purchase receipt available, and confirm your original licence was for Home, matching the current “Core edition.”

I would have support review your existing licence before buying another copy. Reactivation may still be possible, but cannot be guaranteed without validating the licence.

Unfortunately I have already tried contacting the support, but it just redirected me to a generic ai response and useless forms.
it seems to be utterly impossible to talk to a real human anymore, which is quite frustrating, as the AI has no clue what it is doing.
When it says to me "contact support" after telling the AI I want to talk to a human, I clicked it, and was taken to https://visualsupport.microsoft.com/activate where it tried to get me to input my Installation ID. which does not work

Since automatic reactivation has failed, the remaining options are recovering the original retail key or having Microsoft review your existing licence. For your boxed copy, ask the original retailer whether they can help recover the key using your purchase record. Microsoft’s guidance is here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/activation/find-your-windows-product-key.

If the original key is recovered, enter it under Settings > System > Activation > Change product key. Your installed Windows edition must match the licence.

Reinstalling Windows or repeating activation commands cannot replace a missing key or an unavailable digital licence.

Use the Get Help app in windows. Search the phrase billing then select Contact Support at the bottom of the window.

There will be a couple more filters to select then you should see chat with an agent in your browser.
