Windows 11: Explorer crash loop and gray screen on startup linked to low C: drive space

Service: Windows 11, File Explorer (explorer.exe), User Profiles

Scenario: When my computer shuts down while the C drive is low on space, upon rebooting I get stuck on a broken graphical state where the desktop and taskbar fail to load. This has happened to me about 3 times. The behavior varies: sometimes it's a gray/black desktop shell crash, and other times booting into Safe Mode results in a complete gray screen.

Environment: Windows 11 (build 26200), custom PC.

  • Troubleshooting efforts:

I have checked and repaired the disk using chkdsk.

I ran sfc /scannow (no system integrity violations found).

  • I have reviewed guides suggesting a full Windows reinstallation, but I need a targeted fix to repair the profile shell corruption caused by low disk space without wiping the OS and personal data.

Supporting materials: System boots to login, but the graphical shell (explorer.exe) refuses to initialize properly across standard boot and Safe Mode.

Root Cause :

No spaces in your C drive and may be a dump or temp files. may be bad sectors.

Solution :

Check your C driver space and then remove your temp files from your C drive and delete the files from Recycle bin folder.

C:\Windows\Temp

try to load windows in safe mode then try to login. if its good clear the temp files from their.

Please provide some more information on your system.

You indicate you have low Disk Space, if that is indicated as an underlying cause of the problem, what size drive do you have and how much free space is remaining on that drive.

Click your Start Button, type winver and hit Enter

Please provide a screenshot of the resulting dialog.
