An issue with Excel 2016 occurred after the Windows update on September 9, 2026: copying and pasting failed to produce any result.

    KB 5002914 identified.

    To uninstall it in PowerShell:

    & “C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE16\Oarpmany.exe” /removereleaseinpatch “{90160000-0012-0000-1000-0000000FF1CE}” “{27882596-A8ED-4382-9C71-6CD2DD19F732}” ‘1036’ “0”

    This worked for me; copy-and-paste is working again.

    Yes, KB5002914 is the update causing this, and you are right that it applies to classic MSI installations. My affected machines are Office Standard 2016 64-bit, MSI-based, installed under C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16.

    The symptom is a crash rather than a silent failure. Excel terminates and relaunches quickly enough that it looks as though Ctrl+V simply did nothing. The Application event log shows:

    Faulting application name: EXCEL.EXE, version 16.0.5569.1003

    Faulting module name: EXCEL.EXE, version 16.0.5569.1003

    Exception code: 0xc0000005

    Fault offset: 0x00000000000f854a

    It reproduces in a brand new blank workbook: type values into A1:A3, copy them, then paste into C1.

    I was able to rule out the usual causes. It happens in a new blank workbook, so it is not file corruption. It happens under a freshly created Windows user account, so it is not the profile. It came straight back after a full reinstall of Office, because Windows Update reapplied the update. Word pastes normally on the same machine, so the Windows clipboard itself is fine. I see it on both Windows 10 22H2 and Windows 11 25H2, across several machines. Everything worked normally the day before the update installed.

    The timing is unambiguous: the update installed on the morning of 9 September 2026 and the crashes started immediately.

    Is this a known issue, and is a corrected update expected? I can provide a crash dump if that would help.

    For 32-bit version of Office 2016 on Windows 11, this worked for me.

    & “C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE16\Oarpmany.exe” /removereleaseinpatch “{90160000-002A-0000-1000-0000000FF1CE}” “{9C029E7A-4A4A-409D-B5C6-F40BAA71A090}” ‘1036’ “0”

    If that doesn't work, regedit, search 5002914 and you'll find office GUID and patch GUID.

    Plug them into this format and you'll be good to go:

    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE15\Oarpmany.exe" /removereleaseinpatch "{Office_GUID}" "{Patch_GUID}" "1033" "0"

    The copy & paste issues occurs on msi and c2r installs, affecting Excel in MS Office 2016 up to 2024 - as readers reported. Uninstall KB5002914 (on MSI installs) or downgrade the Office build (using xml or gpo) works also. See also my blog post for further details:

    Which specific update are you referring to? For example, the KB article at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/servicing/office/hotfix/excel/5002914 discusses an update intended for classic MSI installations. Most recent Office installations are using click-to-run (virtualization) technology instead.
