How to turn off system updates permanently (trying to avoid Windows 11 upgrade)

My computer is saying it isn't compatible with Windows 11, and yet it is trying to update it every few hours with a countdown. I also just don't want it. I had paused updates, but when I went to check the settings, it said I can't pause updates again until I update the OS to 11. I feel like I can't safely leave my computer alone for more than fifteen minutes during the work day, which is getting in the way of lunch breaks and general life responsibilities. Can I shut this off? If it ends up updating anyway, and my computer isn't compatible, will it reverse the upgrade and let me keep 10 or will my computer be bricked?

Hi,

If the Windows 11 Feature Update appears in Windows Update, it means the system is compatible with Windows 11.

If it ends up updating anyway, and my computer isn't compatible, will it reverse the upgrade and let me keep 10 or will my computer be bricked?

If the system is not compatible with Windows 11, it won't be delivered via Windows Update. Your PC's hardware specs are assessed (through a telemetry task) to determine if the unit is compatible with the Feature update.

Please post the exact error message you're seeing. The error might be due to a hard block, which we may be able to rectify so you can successfully upgrade the OS.

When I open up Windows Update in Settings, it says on the right side "Your PC doesn't currently meet the minimum system requirements to run Windows 11"

I don't want the upgrade at all. I bought Windows 10. I want to keep Windows 10. If they're offering an option to pay into a subscription for long-term security features, where is the option to keep Windows 10?

Windows 10 support ends on October 14, 2026. After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates, technical support, or feature updates for Windows 10.

If you still wish to block Windows 11, you can use Group Policy Objects (GPO) or the registry. Alternatively, you can use the free InControl app to apply the settings.

Download GRC | InControl from https://www.grc.com/incontrol.htm

Run the utility. It shows the existing Windows version.

To remain on the existing Windows version, all you need to do is click “Take Control“.
