A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data
Hi NAMS,
As the forum's AI recommended, first confirm whether Excel can still copy the worksheet using the standard methods:
- Hold Ctrl while dragging the worksheet tab to another position, or
- Right-click the worksheet tab > Move or Copy > select Create a copy > choose the location > OK.
Microsoft documents both methods for copying a worksheet within the same workbook.
One possible reason the copy options may be unavailable is workbook structure protection. Go to Review > Protect Workbook and check whether the workbook structure is protected. When workbook structure protection is enabled, commands such as inserting, deleting, renaming, moving, and copying worksheets are unavailable. If a password was set, you will need that password to remove the protection.
Since you noticed the issue after an update, I would also suggest checking whether it affects only this workbook or Excel more generally:
- Create a new blank workbook and try copying a worksheet there.
- If the same behavior occurs, close Excel, press Windows + R, type: excel /safe and press Enter. Then test the copy operation again. Excel Safe Mode bypasses items such as Excel add-ins, most COM add-ins, startup folders, and some customized settings, so this can help determine whether one of those components is involved.
- Check for another Office update from File > Account > Update Options > Update Now. If Update Options is not available, your organization's administrator may be managing Office updates.
- If the issue continues, you can also repair Microsoft 365 from Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft 365 > Modify. For Click-to-Run installations, Microsoft provides both Quick Repair and Online Repair.
At this stage, I would not assume that the Microsoft 365 update itself caused the issue without first identifying the affected Excel build and checking whether the behavior can also be reproduced in a new workbook.
If the issue remains, please let me know:
- Your Excel version and build from File > Account > About Excel
- Whether Move or Copy is grayed out, produces an error, or simply does nothing
- Whether the same issue occurs in a newly created blank workbook
