In what way does the feature not work? Do you receive error messages?

If Track Changes turns off unexpectedly, check if you could be pressing Ctrl+Shift+E by mistake (toggle command).

If you are saying that the changes do not display properly, then the selected settings will be relevant (as already suggested by Jade Ng).

Typically, you want to display "All Markup" and you want to verify the settings in the Advanced Track Changes Options dialog box. See the screen shot below.

To display the dialog box, go to the Review tab. In the Markup group, click the dialog launcher icon (the little arrow on the bottom right) and then click Advanced Options.

Dear Ted Giletti,

If Track Changes is enabled but not working, the most common causes are that markup is hidden, reviewer filtering is enabled, or the document is protected.

Please follow these steps below:

  1. Go to the Review tab.
  2. Click the Tracking button (the icon with a pencil and red markup lines).
  3. Ensure that Track Changes is enabled.
  4. Make a test edit in the document and check whether the change appears with markup.

If Track Changes is already enabled, please also verify the following:

  • Select Show Markup and ensure that Comments, Insertions and Deletions, and Formatting are all checked.
  • Confirm that changes from All Reviewers are displayed.
  • If the document was shared by another user, check whether editing restrictions or document protection have been applied.

Additionally, please try opening Word in Safe Mode by pressing Windows + R, typing winword /safe, and then selecting OK.

If the issue persists after performing the steps above, could you please provide a screenshot of the Review tab in Word, along with the version of Microsoft Office you are using?

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
