The fastest supported fix is a full Online Repair of Office. The Repair now button in that Excel error dialog often does not fully fix the installation.
- Close all Office apps.
- Open Settings.
- Go to:
- Windows 11: Apps > Installed apps
- Windows 10: Apps > Apps & Features
- Find Microsoft 365 or Office.
- Select it, then choose Modify.
- In How would you like to repair your Office programs, select Online Repair > Repair.
- Note: this repairs the entire Office suite, not just Excel.
- Note: Quick Repair is faster, but Online Repair is the option that makes sure everything gets fixed.
- Follow the on-screen steps and restart the PC if prompted.
If Excel still fails after that, try opening the workbook from inside Excel with Open and Repair:
- Open Excel.
- Select File > Open > Browse.
- Go to the workbook location.
- Select the file.
- Select the arrow next to Open.
- Choose Open and Repair.
If the file shows a message that the extension does not match the actual format, only open it if the source is trusted. If the file was renamed incorrectly, open it and then save it again with the correct file format and extension.
