    If this is the original computer that came with Windows XP, it is recommended that you reinstall it using the manufacturer’s original recovery CD or recovery partition. The factory image may activate automatically because it is matched to that computer’s BIOS. If you no longer have the recovery media, contact the PC manufacturer and ask whether replacement recovery discs are still available.

    Also check the Certificate of Authenticity sticker on the computer. The product key must match both the installed edition, such as XP Home or XP Professional, and the license type. An OEM key normally will not work with ordinary retail installation media, and the reverse can also be true. Reinstalling with the correct matching media may resolve the activation problem.
