If Windows was previously activated with a digital license, the product key may not appear at all after reinstall. That is expected in these common cases:
- If Windows Setup finds a product key stored in the device firmware, it applies it automatically and the product key window does not appear.
- If the device uses a digital license linked to the same Microsoft account, Windows can reactivate after reinstall when connected to the internet.
What to do next:
- Finish the installation if prompted by selecting I don't have a product key.
- After setup, connect the PC to the internet.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account that was previously used on the activated device.
- Open Settings > System > Activation and check activation status.
- If Windows is not activated, run Troubleshoot from the Activation page.
If the PC originally came with Windows preinstalled, the license is often embedded in the motherboard firmware, so replacing the drive does not remove that license.
If the device is refurbished and has a Certificate of Authenticity (COA), use the 25-character key on the COA by going to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Change product key.
