I understand how inconvenient it is when Personal Vault works on your phone but not on your laptop.

Because your laptop is running macOS, please note that Personal Vault is not supported inside the OneDrive desktop application or Finder. Microsoft currently supports Personal Vault through OneDrive on the web, mobile devices, and Windows PCs.

Open OneDrive.com using the latest version of Microsoft Edge, Chrome, or Firefox.
Sign in with the same personal Microsoft account used on your phone, select Personal Vault, and complete the requested identity verification.
If the page does not open correctly, try an InPrivate or Incognito browser window.
If you cannot receive or use the verification code, review your Microsoft account’s security verification methods. 3
If Personal Vault still cannot be unlocked through the browser, contact Microsoft Support using the link above.

I am experiencing the same software bug and I found that all but one of the published workarounds don't work. The one workaround that worked for me was to force Chrome on macOS to authenticate web-based OneDrive using the Microsoft Authenticator app on iOS, which isn't a smooth process, and anyway that solution only worked for a few days. Now it doesn't work anymore. Lots of people have been reporting the same problem for several months to Microsoft and have been complaining on social media apps. How do we encourage Microsoft to fix the problem instead of offering bad workaround ideas?

Thank you for confirming that you are already accessing OneDrive through the browser.

Since Personal Vault works on your phone but still cannot be unlocked in the browser on your Mac, please try using Microsoft Authenticator as the verification method:

Open the latest version of Chrome in an Incognito window.

Sign in to OneDrive using the same personal Microsoft account used on your phone.

Select Personal Vault.

When prompted to verify your identity, choose Microsoft Authenticator instead of SMS or email, if that option is available.

Approve the sign-in request or enter the code generated by the Authenticator app.

If the error continues after trying Authenticator, the issue may require Microsoft Support to review the authentication attempt. You can contact them through here:

I have observed something interesting via experimentation tonight. I have a Mac and a Windows 11 PC. All of my software is kept up-to-date on both computers. Yes, even today's "patch Tuesday" and Chrome updates were applied. Tonight, on both computers, I tried opening the OneDrive personal vault using a variety of web browsers. Guess what I found? On both the Mac and the Windows PC, I experienced NO PROBLEM opening the OneDrive personal vault using MS Edge, but this same action failed in all other browsers on both operating systems. So, the problem is not specific to Chrome. For example, the problem was observed also in Safari (macOS) and DuckDuckGo. I tried accessing the vault with cookies allowed and prior cookies deleted, to see if there were any residual issues blocking access. Is OneDrive Personal Vault access via a web browser now deliberately limited to using only Edge? Until a couple of months ago, it always worked correctly in all browsers on both operating systems. I don't know if this additional information helps.

Thank you for testing this across two machines and several browsers; that is genuinely useful detail.

Personal Vault access is not being deliberately narrowed to Microsoft Edge. The supported browsers documented for Personal Vault are the latest versions of Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, so Safari and DuckDuckGo were never on that list and failing there is expected rather than new.

Chrome is the real anomaly in your results, and that pattern usually points to blocked third-party cookies, an extension, or a stale browser profile rather than a platform change.

Here is what will separate a browser problem from a service problem.

Open the vault in a Chrome Incognito window, which Microsoft recommends for Personal Vault, since extensions are disabled there by default.

Allow third-party cookies for the OneDrive and Microsoft sign-in sites in Chrome, as the verification step is loaded from a separate sign-in domain.

Try the latest Firefox as well, because it is on the supported list and a failure there points away from Chrome itself.

Note the exact wording of the message you get in Chrome, since a verification prompt that never appears and one that appears and rejects the code are different faults.

I cannot confirm any product change here, and no announcement limits Personal Vault to Microsoft Edge, so please treat Edge as a temporary workaround rather than the intended path.

I hope the Incognito window with third-party cookies allowed lets Chrome open the vault again.

Hi,

I’ve tried and Microsoft should know that because there is an error log somewhere with my user id.

I’m not given the option to use the authentication app; straight to passkey!

Hi

Microsoft does not automatically associate the forum with your account error logs. We cannot access those logs or your account details from this thread.

The Microsoft Authenticator option appears only when it is registered as an eligible verification method for that Microsoft account.

On the device where Personal Vault still works, open your Microsoft account security settings.

Check whether Microsoft Authenticator appears under your methods for proving your identity.

Add and verify Microsoft Authenticator if it is missing, but do not remove any existing method until the new one works.

Return to OneDrive in an InPrivate window and select another sign-in method if that option appears.

I hope registering Microsoft Authenticator restores it as a Personal Vault verification option.

Are you telling me that Microsoft no longer supports Passkeys? Why would I want to use Authenticator?

Also, you “hope”? Shouldn’t Microsoft Support “know”?
