For Microsoft certification exams, a given exam cannot be taken more than five times within a 12-month period from the first attempt.
- If the exam is failed 5 times, eligibility to retake it returns 12 months from the date of the first attempt.
- If the exam is failed 3 times and 12 months have already passed since the first attempt, the 12-month cap no longer blocks another attempt. The standard retake waiting rules still apply:
- after the first failure: wait 24 hours
- after the second failure and each later failure: wait 7 days before the next attempt
Microsoft also states that a passed exam cannot be retaken unless the certification has expired, and each retake must be paid for if applicable.
