Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook.com
This can indicate either a compromised Microsoft account or changed security information. Take these steps immediately:
- Check recent account activity at https://account.live.com/activity.
- Review sign-ins and security challenges.
- Mark any unfamiliar activity as This wasn’t me.
- Review the email addresses attached to the Microsoft account.
- Go to Edit account info at https://account.live.com/names/manage.
- Remove any unknown email address if possible.
- If an address is listed but unverified, use Verify only for addresses that belong to the account owner.
- Check sign-in and recovery methods.
- Open the Microsoft account area used to manage sign-in methods.
- Remove any unknown recovery email address or phone number.
- Add trusted security information so account recovery remains possible.
- Restrict sign-in aliases.
- Sign in to account.microsoft.com and go to Your info > Sign-in preferences.
- Allow sign-in only for trusted aliases and save the change.
- If Outlook.com mail is also affected, inspect mailbox settings.
- In Outlook.com, check Settings > Mail > Forwarding and disable any forwarding that was not added intentionally.
- Check Settings > Mail > Rules and remove unfamiliar rules, especially rules that forward, redirect, move, or delete messages.
- Review Sent Items, Deleted Items, Junk Email, Archive, blocked senders, and automatic replies.
- If sign-in is blocked or the unknown security info cannot be removed, use the Microsoft sign-in helper or contact support.
- Sign-in issues can be diagnosed with the Sign-in helper.
- Support can be reached through Contact Microsoft Support.
- Support agents cannot send password reset links or directly change account details.
If a verification prompt shows only unknown contact details, the accepted recovery path is to choose I don’t have any of these and complete the account recovery process.
