Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
For a one-time purchase of Office, the product key is usually only used once to redeem the license to the Microsoft account. After that, reinstalling on a new PC should be done by signing in with the same Microsoft account, not by entering the key again.
Steps:
- On the new Dell PC, go to the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page and sign in with the same Microsoft account that was originally used to buy and redeem Office.
- Install Office from that account.
- Open an Office app and sign in with that same Microsoft account to activate it.
- Since Office was already uninstalled from the old HP laptop, that part of the transfer is already done.
If the new PC shows This product key has already been used, that is expected when the key was already redeemed before. In that case, do not use the key again. Use the Microsoft account associated with the Office purchase to install and activate Office.
If activation still fails after signing in with the correct Microsoft account, Office can be moved to a different computer if the transfer terms in the Software License Terms are followed, but activation may need to be completed by phone.
If the Office copy is Office Home & Business, Office Home & Student, or Office Professional, it is installed on only one computer at a time.
