Hi, I’m having serious stability and Windows system issues on my laptop. The problems started after I ran a Windows optimization tool, and since then Windows has become unstable. I was previously unable to log in properly, and the Windows Hello PIN disappeared. I eventually managed to get back into Windows using System Restore, but several Windows components still aren’t working correctly.

I’m trying to repair my existing Windows installation rather than reset it. Here’s what I’ve found so far:

The Windows Update service (wuauserv) is present, but it will not start and gives Error 1083.

I ran sfc /scannow, which reported that it found corrupted files and successfully repaired them.

I ran SFC again afterward, and it reported “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.”

I ran DISM /Image:C:\ /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth, which reported that the component store is repairable.

I then ran DISM /Image:C:\ /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, but it failed with Error 0x800f0915, saying the repair content could not be found.

Some built-in Windows functionality is still broken. For example, Windows Terminal does not open from the Windows right-click menu.

Windows Explorer/the desktop sometimes goes black for a second, then comes back with a noticeable delay.

Task Manager sometimes crashes unexpectedly.

I also experienced login and Windows Hello PIN problems before using System Restore.

The system is generally unstable, with multiple Windows components and built-in applications behaving incorrectly.

I would like help repairing Windows comprehensively without unnecessarily resetting the PC, especially the Windows Update service, component store, and broken built-in Windows components. I would also like to determine whether there is underlying Windows corruption that still needs to 180538

Hi,

If none of the Q&A Assist procedures worked, use the Windows Refresh feature to fix the OS and Windows Update.

Go to Start Menu > Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now.

Hii,

Try refreshing Windows using an ISO.

Select Download tool now, and select Run. You need to be an administrator to run this tool.

If you agree to the license terms, select Accept.

On the What do you want to do? page, select Create installation media for another PC, and then select Next.

The application will automatically identify the correct version of windows 11 for your system, from Next.

Select which media you want to use ISO file. Save an ISO file to your PC

Wait for the application to perform the iso download and after finishing the download it will close automatically.

After downloading, find the Windows 11 ISO file on your PC, right-click and select “Mount”. If the option is not available, select “Open With” and “Windows Explorer”

Run the “Setup” application, present inside the Windows 11 ISO, to start the installation on the PC.

With the ISO files folder open, click on the “Setup” executable to continue installing Windows 11.

After that, a Get Important Updates window will appear along with the two options Select: Not now

Uncheck the box I want to help improve your Windows installation to skip sending unknown data to Microsoft about the installation process Next

After that, a License Terms window will pop up, here you have to click on the Accept button.

6.Now another “Choose what to keep” window or “Ready to install” window will pop up.

At this point, you need to change some settings. Click the “Change what to keep” link

You can now see the “Choose what to keep” window along with the three options given below:

Select Keep My files and Programs.

Then click on the Next button.

Finally, the Ready to Install window will appear along with the Install button.

In this step, you have to click on the Install button to start reinstalling Windows 11. During this process, your computer or laptop may restart sometimes.

That folder appears as hidden directly on the local C: drive. Check if the folder is there; if not, the update likely didn't complete successfully, which is causing the instability.

Is it possible to perform a clean install after backing up your data?

Hi,

After the failure occurs, you should check within Windows by going to File Explorer > View > Options > Show hidden files.

Navigate to the local drive (C:) > $Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther.

Check if that folder exists; if so, see if the setupact and setupperr logs are there. If the folder isn't there, the failure occurred during pre-initialization. Did you try performing a clean boot?

Go to the Start menu > Settings > System > About and take a screenshot.

Hi,

If you access Device Manager, please check if the AMD video driver has loaded, as well as the NVIDIA driver—even if the ISO performed a reinstallation.

The current state points to Windows corruption that was only partially repaired. Since sfc /scannow repaired files and then returned clean, but DISM /RestoreHealth still cannot find repair content and built-in components remain unstable, the next practical path is to repair Windows in stages rather than reset it immediately.

Run the standard online repair sequence again from an elevated Command Prompt.
- DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for a success message such as “The restore operation completed successfully” or “The operation completed successfully”.
- Then run: sfc /scannow
- Do not close the Command Prompt window until verification reaches 100%.
If DISM still cannot complete because repair content cannot be found, use a repair source with DISM.
- The supported syntax is: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:\RepairSource\Windows /LimitAccess
- Replace C:\RepairSource\Windows with the actual location of the repair source.
- This is the documented method when Windows Update cannot provide the files DISM needs.
Because Windows Update is also broken, run the Windows Update Troubleshooter.
- The troubleshooter can automatically analyze and fix Windows Update problems, including a corrupted download, and can also report a pending reboot blocking updates.
Reset the Windows Update components manually if the service remains broken.
- Warning: these are advanced command-line steps and require administrator permissions.
- Run these commands one at a time in an elevated Command Prompt:
  - net stop bits
  - net stop wuauserv
  - ren %systemroot%\softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak
  - ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak
  - net start bits
  - net start wuauserv
- Restart the PC after the commands complete.
Check the disk for file system errors.
- Warning: disk repair requires a restart and should not be interrupted.
- Run: chkdsk /f C:
- If prompted to schedule the check at next restart, type Y, then restart.
- This is relevant because component store and service failures can persist if the file system itself has errors.
If instability continues, perform a clean restart of Windows.
- A clean restart starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs and helps rule out software conflicts caused by optimization tools or third-party utilities.
If Windows components are still broken after DISM, SFC, Windows Update repair, and disk repair, use an in-place repair install.
- This is the best fit when Windows remains unstable but a full reset is not desired.
- The accepted guidance in similar cases is to perform an in-place repair using the Windows ISO and choose the option to keep files and apps.
- This refreshes Windows system components without removing personal files and installed applications.
If repair options are exhausted, use Recovery options only after backing up important files.
- Some recovery options can result in data loss.
- Start with the least disruptive option first.

Given the symptoms described—broken built-in apps, Explorer black-screen behavior, Task Manager crashes, Windows Hello issues, and a damaged component store—the most complete non-reset path is:

repair disk with chkdsk /f C:
repair Windows image with DISM, using a repair source if needed
run sfc /scannow again
reset Windows Update components
if instability remains, perform an in-place repair install keeping files and apps
