Hello, I went to scan for viruses with MS Defender and was asked about a subscription. Is Defender a subscription program?

    No, Microsoft Defender Antivirus is not a subscription. It’s built into Windows and is available through the Windows Security app. If you were prompted to subscribe while trying to run a scan, you were most likely opening the separate Microsoft Defender app, which is included with Microsoft 365 Personal and Family. If you just want to scan your PC for viruses, open Windows Security --› Virus & threat protection --› Quick scan. You don't need a Microsoft 365 subscription for that.

    Hi, @LiWright

    The "Microsoft Defender" app you opened does require a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription.

    For the free antivirus that is built into Windows 11, open "Windows Security" instead.

    Go to: Start > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection

    From there, you can run Quick, Full, or Custom scans without any subscription.

    Click "Add comment" to let me know if you cannot find "Windows Security" or "Virus & threat protection."
