    Hi Sasia G,

I understand how frustrating it can be to have the original product key rejected, especially if Windows was previously activated on this device.

At this point, I recommend that you review and try the steps provided in the AI generated answer on your thread. That reply typically include the most relevant checks for this scenario.

Could you please confirm the following?

    • Which Windows version and edition are currently installed?
    • What exact error message or error code appears under Settings > Update & Security > Activation?
    • Did Windows come preinstalled on this PC, or was the product key purchased separately?
    • Was Windows recently reinstalled, or was any major hardware changed, such as the motherboard?

In the meantime, please make sure the PC is connected to the internet and that the date, time, and time zone are correct. Then open the Activation page and run Troubleshoot if that option is available. If the device was previously activated with a digital license, sign in with the same Microsoft account that was used on the PC before, then run the troubleshooter again.

Please do not post the full product key here. The error code and the last five characters of the key, if needed, are enough for troubleshooting.

Let me know what the Activation page shows after trying these steps, and we can narrow this down further. Thank you so much for your understanding.

If Windows will not accept the original product key, the most common causes are an edition mismatch or that the device is activated by digital license instead of a stored key.

    Try these steps:

    1. Check the installed Windows edition. Activation can fail if the key is for a different edition than what is installed.
      • Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
      • If the installed edition does not match the license, reinstall the correct edition.
    2. Enter the key manually.
      • Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
      • Select Change product key and enter the 25-character key.
    3. Run the Activation Troubleshooter.
      • Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
      • Select Troubleshoot.
      • If Windows previously had a digital license, the troubleshooter may restore it.
    4. If the PC came with Windows preinstalled, the key may be embedded in firmware instead of something that must be typed manually. In that case, Windows should activate automatically when the correct edition is installed.
    5. If Windows was reinstalled, confirm that the correct edition was chosen during setup. Reinstalling the wrong edition can cause activation errors even with a valid license.
    6. If the PC is new and has never activated, or if activation still fails after troubleshooting, contact the PC manufacturer.

If the issue happens during Windows setup with a message that the product key does not match any available Windows image, the installation media does not match the key. That can also happen when a key in firmware does not match the media being used. In that case, use installation media for the correct edition, or correct the key source in an Unattend file, EI.cfg, or PID.txt if one is present.
