Copilot Lauches Itself Automatically Without Request

Hi there,

I am currently experiencing a problem with Copilot automatically lauches itself at random, this issue has happened since the first day I bought this MSI 16 AI+ Flip laptop, it happens once or twice a day without any direct triggers or requests which is weird.

Have tried several troubleshotting steps but doesn't work, including:

Disabling Copilot as Startup-apps in task manager
Toggling-off "Copilot" or "Microsoft AI Assistance" features in settings under "Personalization" section
Uninstalling Copilot apps

Any instruction, suggestion, or resolution on troubleshotting is appericiated.

Hello H T,

Since Copilot still opens randomly after you disabled its startup options and uninstalled the app, could you clarify exactly what opens?

The standalone Copilot app
The Copilot sidebar in Microsoft Edge
Copilot inside another app, such as Word or Excel

Also, does it happen only when signing in to Windows, or randomly while using the laptop? Immediately after it happens, please note whether you pressed the dedicated Copilot key, used the touchscreen or stylus, or opened an MSI utility.

I could not verify this as a documented Microsoft or MSI issue, so identifying which Copilot interface opens and what occurred immediately beforehand is the safest next step.

Hi there,

It is the standard alone copilot app that opens, not the copilot 365

It happens randonly when I am doing my own work or browsing, I suspect it might be a issue related to my touchpad since the pop-up happens when I am controlling my touchpad. But it is not a gesture issue either, I have verified no corresponding gesture could launch copilot directly in the setting

I am certain no copilot launch key is pressed before the pop-ups

Thanks for the follow-up. Since Copilot opens while you are using the touchpad, please try this isolation test:

Temporarily disable the touchpad and use an external mouse for a day.

In Copilot, open Account > Settings > Copilot Keyboard Shortcuts and temporarily disable or change the shortcuts.

In Windows, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard and change Customize Copilot key on keyboard to Search.

If Copilot stops opening with the touchpad disabled, this points more toward the touchpad driver or an MSI-specific input function. In that case, install the latest touchpad, chipset, and MSI Center updates from MSI.

If Copilot continues opening, please note what you were pressing immediately beforehand.

For the Microsoft Copilot app on Windows, the supported next steps are to fully remove and then reinstall the app, because Copilot is treated as a standard app in Windows.

Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
Search for Copilot.
Select the … menu next to it, then select Uninstall.
Restart Windows.
Reinstall Copilot from the Microsoft Store.

If the issue continues after reinstalling, run the built-in Copilot troubleshooters in Get Help:

Open the Get Help app.
In the search box, run Copilot connectivity troubleshooter.
Follow the prompts and review the findings.

If the problem is specifically that Copilot appears in Microsoft 365 apps, and the device is signed in with a Microsoft account, Copilot can be turned off per app by clearing Enable Copilot in that app. This setting is separate for each app and each device.

For Windows environments managed by IT, administrators can also prevent installation of the Microsoft Copilot app by using AppLocker. The documentation notes that AppLocker should be used instead of the legacy Turn Off Windows Copilot policy, which is subject to near-term deprecation.
