Multiple errors with Windows activation after updating my bios

I have a self-built PC running Windows 11 Pro. I recently replaced essentially all of my PC hardware, including the motherboard, but kept my old HDD with my existing Windows installation. A couple months go by then i install a new SSD I got and used the bootable USB feature to install Windows 11 Pro

Windows initially booted and was activated with the product key normally on the new hardware. After I updated my motherboard BIOS, Windows became deactivated.

My Activation state reports error 0xC004F211. The Activation Troubleshooter fails with 0x80070520. Running slmgr /ato gives 0x803F7001. slmgr /dlv reports RETAIL channel, License Status: Notification, and Notification Reason: 0xC004F034.

I am signed into my Microsoft account, and both my old PC and new PC appear under my Microsoft account's Devices. I don't have the original 25-character product key.

I know i do have a Retail product key and not a OEM one. But unfortunately i don't remember if i used a product key or it came preinstalled with the motherboard.

Is there a way to recover/reactivate my existing retail license on this hardware? Please help!

Hello, Illmenia.

Yes, very often activation disappears after updating the BIOS firmware. This is an activation server bug. Try this way:

  1. Run the command prompt as an Administrator and run the commands

slmgr.vbs /ipk <ProductKey>

slmgr.vbs /ato

where <ProductKey> is a 25-digit unique product key in the format XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

  1. After completing step 1, restart the PC and check the activation status after 5-7 minutes.

If there is still no activation, then you need to contact a Microsoft support specialist directly in the chat. To do this, log in to your personal Microsoft account on the page https://support.microsoft.com/en-GB/home/contact?SourceApp=smc2&ContactUsExperienceEntryPointAssetId=www.microsoft.com

In the search bar, type (without quotes) "agent support" and press Enter or click on Get Help. Ignore the search results, and click on the "Contact Support" button at the bottom. On the next page, select "Windows" and "Technical Support" from the drop-down lists, and then click on "Confirm". Next, select the chat "Chat with a support agent in your web browser" and on the next page, enter (if requested) your email address and click on "Confirm". A chat window will open in a new tab. Wait for the specialist's response and describe your problem (to speed up the process, you can send a link to this discussion). After checking the license, activation will be restored.
