Submitted Assignment Keeps Showing as Past Due

I’m having a problem with one specific assignment in Microsoft Teams for Education.

Originally, I was not added to my Math class Team correctly. My teacher accidentally added me as an Owner, and I then changed myself to a Member. When I first opened this assignment, Teams showed the message: “Looks like you haven’t been added to this assignment. Check with your teacher for details.” I could not see the assignment content/file properly and there was no option to attach anything or turn it in.

My teacher later changed/extended the due date. After that, the assignment became accessible and I was able to complete and submit it normally. Teams showed the green “Turned in” status.

However, after closing and reopening Teams, the assignment started appearing under “Past Due” again, even though it is already submitted. In the Grades section, it says “Turned in.”

I tried Unsubmit → Resubmit. This temporarily makes the assignment appear correctly under Completed, but as soon as I close and reopen Teams, it returns to Past Due again.

The problem happens on all platforms I have tried:

Teams desktop app

Teams web version

Teams mobile app

I also completely uninstalled and reinstalled Teams on my laptop, but the issue remained.

This makes me think the assignment/submission status or the assignment’s recipient record is not being synchronized correctly on the backend.

Please investigate the assignment and submission record and determine why a successfully submitted assignment is being classified as Past Due after Teams is reopened.

    Hi Reshayle,

From your description, the fact that the assignment originally reported that you had not been added to it, but now shows "Turned in" in Grades while continuing to appear as Past Due, suggests there may be an inconsistency between the assignment status and the submission record.

You may wish to first contact your teacher to confirm:

    • That you are correctly listed as a student/member of the class.
    • That you are included in the assignment's assigned recipients.
    • Whether they can see your submission normally from their side.
    • Whether the assignment was assigned to a specific group of students rather than the entire class.

If your teacher can see the submission correctly and confirms that you are properly assigned, yet the assignment continues to reappear as Past Due across Teams desktop, web, and mobile, then the issue is unlikely to be related to the Teams client itself.

Unfortunately, this is a public community forum, so no one here has access to your assignment records or backend data. If the checks above do not identify the cause, your school's IT administrator may need to contact Microsoft Support for further investigation.

In case you do not know who your IT admin is, kindly refer to this article: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support

I hope this information is helpful. Feel free to let me know if there's any update.
