I have had trouble with outlook and decided to restart the laptop as a way to clear the problem (sometimes worked in the past). Unfortunately, the Restart has been going on for more than 3 hours. I've tried to open task master but couldn't. ON/OFF button doesn't work. I was thinking of taking the battery out, but I want that to be the last resort. Operating on windows 11, and seemed to be up to date with updates. Using Microsoft 365., but Outlook Classic.

Have you got a power cord plugged in to the laptop or is it just running on battery.

I just want to confirm, when you say restarting do you mean Start > Power > Restart?

If you want to power down press and hold the power button for at least 8 seconds and it should power off. You can then power on again to see if it recovers. This is only if you mean you restarted as I detailed above.

Try this in order:

Disconnect all external devices from the laptop, including USB devices, printers, external drives, keyboard, and mouse.
Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to force the laptop to shut down.
Wait a few minutes, then turn the laptop back on.

If the laptop still stays stuck on Restarting, disconnect the AC adapter and let the battery drain completely as a last resort.

For the Outlook issue after the PC starts again, these are the supported next steps for classic Outlook:

Run Windows Update until Windows shows You’re up to date.
If Outlook opens, start it in safe mode:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type outlook.exe /safe and select OK.
- If Outlook works in safe mode, disable COM add-ins from File > Options > Add-ins > COM Add-ins > Go.
If Outlook still hangs or will not reopen, repair Office from Control Panel > Programs and Features > right-click Microsoft Office 2016 > Change.
If needed, repair Outlook data files with the Inbox Repair Tool.
If the issue started after Windows updates and the Outlook profile uses POP or PST files, install all available Windows updates until Windows reports You’re up to date, because a known issue was fixed by Windows.
