Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
Try these steps in order:
- Restart the device Wait a few minutes, restart Windows, sign back in, and open the Microsoft 365 app again.
- Run an Office repair
- On Windows 10: right-click Start > Apps and Features.
- On Windows 11: right-click Start > Installed apps.
- Select the Microsoft 365 or Office product.
- Choose Modify.
- If prompted:
- For Click-to-run, select Online Repair > Repair.
- For MSI-based installs, select Repair and then Continue.
- If the app shows “Something went wrong” when starting Use the same repair path above. Online Repair is the more complete option; Quick Repair is faster but only replaces corrupted files.
- If this is a university account issue If sign-in or authentication is blocked because of a school account or Microsoft Authenticator problem, contact the university IT team. They can reset the authentication method or provide a temporary access code.
- If Office still cannot be installed on the device Check whether the PC meets Office system requirements. Office cannot be installed on unsupported operating systems such as Windows Vista or Windows XP. If the device does not meet requirements, use Office Online in a browser instead.
- If more help is needed Use Contact Us on the Microsoft support page, ask in the community forums, or send feedback from an Office app through File > Feedback.
