Additional Microsoft Defender tools and services that provide security across various platforms and environments
For a laptop, the issue is likely with the sign-in method rather than device registration.
- If this is a Windows laptop, it should be added automatically when signed in with the Microsoft account. Only Surface devices can be added manually by serial number. macOS, Android, and iOS devices cannot be added to the Microsoft account device list manually.
- For Microsoft Defender, if the app is still installed, open it and sign back in with the personal Microsoft account. If it was uninstalled, re-download the app and sign back in.
- If the passkey is not recognized, set up a new passkey first, then remove any old passkeys that no longer apply from the account or authenticator app.
- If signing in with a mobile-device passkey or QR flow, make sure Bluetooth is enabled on both devices, both devices are in range, and both are connected to the internet.
- If the sign-in flow shows “Something went wrong,” common causes include timeout during sign-in, Bluetooth issues during cross-device sign-in, or an older OS/browser that does not fully support passkeys.
- If many sign-in attempts were made, Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication can temporarily block additional attempts. In that case, wait and try again later or use a different MFA method.
If the laptop previously had Defender and the app was not removed, reopening the app and signing in again is the supported re-add path.
