I am unable to sign in to the Azure Portal using my personal Microsoft account.

My Azure subscription/account is associated with a personal Microsoft account, not an intentionally created Work or School account.

Microsoft Authenticator is configured with this account as a Personal Microsoft Account. The Authenticator app generates an 8-digit rotating verification code for it.

However, when I sign in to portal.azure.com, after entering my credentials Azure asks me to:

Enter the 6-digit code displayed in the Microsoft Authenticator app

The input only accepts six digits, while the Authenticator entry for the same email address provides an eight-digit code.

I therefore cannot complete authentication to the Azure Portal.

My questions are:

  1. Why is Azure requesting a 6-digit Entra/Authenticator code when I am signing in using a personal Microsoft account?
  2. Does Azure maintain a separate Entra ID identity for my personal Microsoft account, even though the email address is the same?
  3. How can I correctly register Microsoft Authenticator for the Azure/Entra identity if I cannot currently get through MFA to access the portal?
  4. Is there a supported account-recovery or MFA-reset procedure for this situation?

I do not want to remove or recreate the Microsoft account because it is associated with existing Azure resources/subscriptions.

I have deliberately omitted my email address, tenant ID, subscription ID, and other account information from this public post. Alternatively, I am also willing to completely remove my Azure presence if recovering access is not possible. Specifically, I would like to know the supported procedure to:

  • cancel and permanently delete all Azure subscriptions associated with this account;
  • delete all Azure resources associated with those subscriptions;
  • delete the Microsoft Entra tenant/directory that was created for my Azure account; and
  • remove any remaining Azure-specific association with my personal Microsoft account.

I do not want to delete my underlying personal Microsoft Account or unrelated Microsoft services associated with it. I only want the Azure subscriptions/resources and associated Entra tenant removed. Since I am currently unable to complete MFA and therefore cannot access the Azure Portal, is there a Microsoft Support process through which account ownership can be verified and either:

  1. MFA access can be recovered/reset, or
  2. the Azure subscriptions and associated tenant can be permanently closed? If this cannot be handled through Microsoft Q&A, please advise which Microsoft support/recovery channel should be used.

    Hi,

    The key point is that a personal Microsoft account (MSA) and a Microsoft Entra ID account are separate identity systems, even if they use the same email address.

    Before deleting anything, I recommend:

    Make sure you select Personal account, not Work or school account, when signing in.

    If Azure is asking for a 6-digit Authenticator code, it may be authenticating an Entra ID account. The 8-digit code used with a personal Microsoft account will not work for an Entra MFA prompt.

    If you cannot complete MFA, do not delete the Microsoft account, subscription, or tenant. Recover access first.

    If the issue is with the personal Microsoft account, use Microsoft’s account recovery process.

    If the issue is Azure/Entra MFA, contact Microsoft Azure Support, as Microsoft Q&A cannot reset MFA or verify ownership.

    Once access is restored, you can review the subscriptions, resources, and Entra directories before deciding whether anything needs to be removed.

    I strongly recommend not using deletion as a way to recover access, as this could result in permanent data loss.

    For privacy, please do not post email addresses, Tenant IDs, Subscription IDs, recovery details, or other account information publicly.
