Using New Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
For new Outlook for Windows, the supported path is to remove and re-add the account rather than bypass the Yahoo sign-in screen to edit server settings directly.
- Open View tab > View settings > Accounts > Your accounts.
- Under Email accounts, remove the affected Yahoo/Cox account if it is already listed.
- Select Add Account.
- Enter the email address and select Continue.
- When prompted, enter the account password and complete sign-in.
For new Outlook, some non-Microsoft providers such as Yahoo may require account changes on the provider side before the account can be added.
If the account is being treated as a Yahoo-backed account, Outlook Desktop supports Yahoo OAuth, so an app password is not needed when Yahoo OAuth is available. In that case, sign in with the regular password, not the app password.
If the account keeps reverting to old provider details or the sign-in flow does not complete, use classic Outlook / Mail in Control Panel to verify or update the incoming and outgoing server settings:
- Open Control Panel.
- Open Mail.
- Select Email Accounts.
- Select the affected account and choose Change.
- Check the Incoming mail server and Outgoing mail server values against the provider’s current settings.
- Under Logon Information, verify the correct User Name and Password are being used.
- If manually adding an IMAP account in classic Outlook, make sure Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is unchecked.
If Outlook never prompts for the password during IMAP setup in classic Outlook, create the account again from Control Panel > Mail > Email Accounts > New and complete setup there.
