how do i install a standalone program with the subscription 365 on the same computer

Well it was a good thought. and thanks for your help, The other computer is only Win 7 and has Pub 10 on it.

the 21 version is only on that separate hard disk. What i found was the Pub icon Pub , exe. In another location there are some file called digital licenses but i have no idea what they mean.

So it looks like i can't use it. I think i did say it would not let me copy that file to another location -won't open. and when i clicked on it on the hard drive it just tried to open or install on the Win 10 computer so i closed it.

Thought i had a way out. I am so disappointed.

I understand the disappointment. But I wouldn't give up quite yet.

From your description, the PUB.EXE file on the separate drive sounds like it came from an existing Publisher installation, not the Publisher 2021 installer. Unfortunately, PUB.EXE can't normally be copied to another computer and run on its own because Publisher requires other Office components and licensing information installed with the application.

The files you found called “digital licenses” are interesting, but don't modify, copy, or delete them yet. They may be remnants of the previous Office installation and may not be usable to reinstall Publisher.

One more thing we can check. On the separate drive, could you search for any of the following: setup.exe, .iso files, or folders named Office, Microsoft Office, or Publisher?

If you find setup.exe, please don't run it yet. Let us know its location or post a screenshot showing the file and surrounding folder contents. Then we can determine whether you actually have the Publisher 2021 installation media.

Also, if that separate hard drive originally came from another Windows computer, do you still have access to that original computer or its Windows installation? That could give us another option for identifying the Publisher license and installation source.

The Windows 7 computer with Publisher 2010 can remain as it is for now; don't change that installation while we're investigating the Publisher 2021 files.

Thank you. I had to disconnect that separate hard drive to do some work on this computer. The Pub 21 was orig on this computer which is why it shows up on that 2021 total back-up on the hard drive. The subscription version of 365 seems to have deleted all reference to the older pub. I don't remember if it was stand alone at that time or if it were a part of a Version of Office. I saw on the drive there is an icon for Office 16. I can't find any paper work for pub 2021 or even a key written down in my Micro folder. I think it was in an email which i lost of lot of because of a glitch in the outlook program.

there are some setup icons on this computer dating from 2021 -2023 -2025.but i could get a screen shot and could not cut and paste the info. 2 files say application and 4 say configuration.

in iso. there are some amd 64 files and some global install orders. I didn't anything marked office

FYI.. I do not want to up date the Win 7 computer too far because it runs a software program no longer available and it runs my photo negative scanner. Both of which did not do Win 10 updates.

A thought --can i buy a new/old laptop with win 10 but not the subscription 365. and install 2021 and then just use it exclusively to work with the pub files. Might be a little extreme but i have to do something. Neither Word of pdf will work with the files.

Since Publisher 2021 was originally installed on this computer, I don't think you need to keep searching the backup drive for PUB.EXE or copying the old Office files. Those files by themselves won't recreate a working Publisher installation.

Before buying another computer or another copy of Publisher, I suggest checking whether your original Publisher 2021 license is still associated with your Microsoft account.

Sign in to your Microsoft account > Services & subscriptions using the Microsoft account/email address you were using when Publisher 2021 was originally installed. Look for Publisher 2021, Office 2021, or another Office 2021 product in the list.

Once you redeem an Office 2021 product key, the license is associated with your Microsoft account, and you normally reinstall it from that account rather than finding and re-entering the original product key.

If you find Publisher/Office 2021 there, don't install anything yet. Let us know the exact product name displayed (for example, Publisher 2021, Office Professional 2021, etc.). That will tell us what license you actually have and the safest way to reinstall it.

If nothing related to Office/Publisher 2021 appears, try any other Microsoft account/email address you may have used around 2021. The full Office product key generally isn't displayed inside Office, so not finding the key written down doesn't necessarily mean you've lost the license.

As for buying another Windows laptop specifically for Publisher 2021: don't spend the money yet. Let's first establish whether you already own a reinstallable Publisher 2021 license.

Good morning. On this computer and in the Micro account i can't not find anything before the subscription version. On the back-up hard drive is the Pub 2021 and also Office 16 and Office 15. but i don't know how to open them to get any more information. as you said they will not independently open on the older computer from the backup drive. Yesterday i tried Micro help to see if there was any way to get more info from the drive - said no. wanted to see my receipt for the purchase. (not available) but in the transfers back and forth --you may find this comment interesting ' " the Office 365 business edition will have "an app" that works like Pub and can use Pub files." But when pressed he could not give me any real information on how well it would work. Wish i could find some kind of receipt or downloaded disk or something to work with. I also found out the old computer is win7 and would have to be updated to at least 8 to install 2021 on it. I need to keep below Win 10 to continue to run some programs and equipment on it.
