i'm getting mixed messages regarding publisher out as of 10/1 - i was suggested to buy stand alone publisher - then told not necessary - yert i'm told i won't be able to access 4 years worth of publisher created files i still need - if my existing publisher won't work - will the stand alone continue access old and create ongoing files

If Publisher is part of a Microsoft 365 subscription: access ends after October 1, 2026. After that, Publisher will no longer be included in Microsoft 365, and Microsoft 365 subscribers will no longer be able to open or edit Publisher files in Publisher.
If Publisher is a perpetual standalone version: it can still be installed and used beyond October 2026, but support ends in October 2026.

For the specific concern about old .pub files:

With Microsoft 365 Publisher, those files will no longer be openable in Publisher after the retirement date.
With a perpetual version of Publisher, existing files can still be accessed and edited after that date.
