Microsoft Authenticator after phone CPU/motherboard repair

My Android phone stopped working due to a hardware issue. The repair technician is working on the motherboard and may replace the CPU/processor, but as far as I understand, the entire motherboard is not being replaced and the original storage may remain.

Before the phone stopped working, I had Microsoft Authenticator configured on this phone for my work account. When I sign in to my work account/Teams on my laptop, a number is displayed on the laptop and I normally receive a notification in Microsoft Authenticator on my phone. I enter the displayed number in the Authenticator app and approve the sign-in.

I would like to understand what happens to this existing Authenticator registration after the hardware repair:

If only the CPU/processor is replaced or repaired, while the original motherboard/storage and existing Android data remain, will my existing Microsoft Authenticator registration and number-matching approvals still work?

Is the Authenticator registration tied to hardware/security keys that could change when the CPU is replaced, even if the app and its data are still present?

If the existing Authenticator registration no longer works, can I simply sign in to Microsoft Authenticator again using the same work account, or does my organization's IT administrator need to reset/re-register my MFA?

If the repaired phone is no longer recognized as the previously registered device, will authentication requests continue to be sent to the old device registration?

My main concern is whether I will still be able to receive and approve the number-matching authentication requests for my work account after the CPU-level motherboard repair, assuming the phone is not factory-reset and the original storage/data are retained.

    I understand your concern, especially since you rely on Authenticator to access your work account.

    Unfortunately, there is no way to confirm in advance whether the existing Authenticator registration will continue working after this type of hardware repair. Microsoft does not document how a CPU or motherboard-level repair affects an existing registration.

    If the phone starts normally and the Authenticator app and its data remain usable, the registration may continue working. However, retaining the original storage does not guarantee this.

    After you receive the repaired phone:

    1. Open Authenticator and check whether your work account still appears normally.
    2. Test a work account sign-in.
    3. If the number-matching notification arrives and you can approve it, no further action should be needed.
    4. If the notification does not arrive, the account shows “Action required,” or the approval fails, you will need to register Authenticator again.

    You can do this from the Security info page by selecting Add sign-in method > Microsoft Authenticator.

    Simply signing in to the Authenticator app with the same work account may not restore the previous registration. Microsoft confirms that Authenticator backup restores only the account name for work or school accounts, and the account must be set up again: Restore account credentials from Microsoft Authenticator | Microsoft Support

    If Authenticator is your only verification method and you cannot access the Security info page, you will need to contact your organization’s IT administrator.     The previous device registration may remain listed until it is removed or reset. If you successfully register Authenticator again, test the new registration before removing any obsolete entry.
