Unable to change General channel layout from Threads to Posts on iOS (Teams for Education)

Hello,

I am experiencing an issue with newly created Microsoft Teams teams in our school.

We use Microsoft Teams as an official communication channel for approximately 70 staff members, and we create new teams for each school year.

When creating new teams this year, the following warning appears at the top of the General channel:

“Some people in this channel have a different view from you. Some messages may appear out of order and disconnected from a thread. This may impact notifications.”

On a desktop version, the channel has the normal Posts layout. However, when accessing the same General channel through the Teams app on an iPhone, it is displayed in the Threads layout.

This is a significant problem for us because we need the traditional Posts layout for communication and announcements throughout the school year. Additionally, the Files tab does not appear in the Threads layout, which is essential for our work.

I tested the team with several colleagues, and the problem appears to occur only on iPhones. However, I cannot be completely certain, as my test group was relatively small.

I have also read that, starting in May 2026, the first channel in newly created Microsoft Teams teams defaults to the threaded conversation layout rather than the traditional Posts layout.

This made me wonder whether this recent change could be causing the problem.

As far as I understand, Teams for Education previously used the Posts layout by default, and channel layout settings were not available for Education users. My guess is that the new update, which makes the first channel use the Threads layout by default, may have overridden the previous default for Education teams. If this is the case, Education users may now be unable to change the automatically created General channel back to the Posts layout.

Interestingly, when I created another channel within the same team, in addition to the automatically created General channel, that channel was displayed using the Posts layout even on an iPhone.

This makes me wonder whether the issue is specifically related to the automatically created first (General) channel or whether it could be a bug in the Teams app for iOS.

Could anyone clarify the following?

  1. Is the different layout on iPhones a known bug that can be expected to be fixed?
  2. Is the new default Threads layout for the first channel overriding the previous behaviour of Teams for Education?
  3. Is there currently any way to force the General channel to use the Posts layout consistently across all devices?

I would greatly appreciate any clarification or advice, as we rely heavily on Teams for internal communication throughout the school year.

Thank you.

    Dear Val,

Unfortunately, as a forum moderator, I am not able to inspect your tenant or the channel's underlying configuration. My role here is limited to general guidance you can apply from your side. Your testing points to a genuine client inconsistency rather than anything you have misconfigured. The fact that only the automatically created General channel is affected, while a manually created channel renders as Posts on the same device, is a strong signal, and it fits your theory that the May 2026 default for the first channel is involved. Taking your questions in turn:

    1. I could not find a published known-issue notice for this specific iOS behavior, but since it conflicts with the documented EDU behavior, it is worth reporting as a probable defect.
    2. The May 2026 change is a credible explanation, as it targets the automatically created first channel in new teams, which matches your General-channel-only symptoms.
    3. A channel owner can set the layout via More options > Edit channel > Conversation layout > Posts. If that option is not exposed for your Education teams, there is no documented tenant-level override.

The banner you are seeing is expected when clients disagree on layout. Older Teams versions display a threaded conversation as a post with replies, and that mismatched layouts can cause messages to appear out of order along with bolding and notification problems. So confirming every iPhone is fully updated through the App Store is genuinely worth doing first. It would also help to check whether Android shows the same thing, and to view the channel in a browser, as that will tell you whether this is iOS-specific.

Given the impact on school-wide communication, please report it through Feedback > Report a problem in Teams, and have your admin raise a support case so it is logged against your tenant: Get support - Microsoft 365 admin. If you don't know who your IT administrator is, please refer to this article: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support

A technical support engineer can perform a remote session to investigate the situation, verify the backend configurations, and run any necessary synchronization tools to resolve the problem. If the issue requires further attention, they can escalate it to a specialized team for deeper analysis.

I hope this information is helpful and provides you with a clear path forward. Should you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out. I'm always happy to help. Have a wonderful day.
