Dear bogbean,
Thank you for the screenshot, it shows the problem clearly. Both numbered groups sit at the same level of one multilevel list, so Word treats them as a single list definition. That is why selecting one number highlights them all, and why changing the format affects every item at that level. The fix is to make the second group a separate list rather than part of the first.
- Select only the paragraphs in the second numbered group. Select the text itself rather than clicking a number, as clicking a number selects the whole connected list.
- Right-click the first number in that group and choose Set Numbering Value.
- Tick Start new list, then set the value to 1.
Once the groups are separated, you can format each one independently, including turning one back into bullets without affecting the other.
For future sections, the same principle applies as you type:
- Press Enter after the bullet above, then press Tab to demote to the sub level.
- Turn off bullets with Home > Bullets, then apply Home > Numbering.
- Type your numbered items.
- After the last one, press Enter, then Shift + Tab to return to the bullet level and reapply your bullet format.
- If Word continues numbering from the previous group, use Set Numbering Value > Start new list again.
It is a little tedious the first few times, but Start new list is the setting that gives you the independent ranges you are after.
I hope this helps, and do let me know how you get on with it.
