how can i check that i am registered in the Windows Insider Program? every time i try to find out, i get: Smart App Control blocked a file that may be unsafe. What's this about?

The Smart App Control message is separate from your Windows Insider registration. It means Windows blocked a particular file or app because it could not confirm that the item was trusted or safe. It does not necessarily mean that your Insider registration failed.

To check the status directly, open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program. If you see a linked account and an Insider channel such as Canary, Dev, Beta, or Release Preview, the device is configured to receive Insider builds. If the page shows Get started instead, the device may not currently be enrolled.

You can also press Windows key + R, enter winver, and check the OS build currently installed. However, the build number alone does not confirm whether your account is registered, so the Windows Insider Program page in Settings is the more useful check.

Regarding the blocked file, could you clarify:

What file or app were you trying to open?
Where did you download it from?
Does the warning appear when opening Windows Settings, or only after downloading or running a separate tool?
What is the exact filename shown in the Smart App Control notification?

For now, I would not recommend turning off Smart App Control or trying to bypass the warning, especially if the file came from an unofficial source.

To check whether the device is registered in the Windows Insider Program:

Open PowerShell.

Run:

   Get-WmiObject win32_operatingsystem | select Version

Press Enter. The command shows the Windows version, and the last numbers are the Insider Preview build.

Also verify the Insider settings directly:

Go to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program.
Check whether the registered Insider account is connected.
Check whether the device is set to the expected channel.

About the Smart App Control blocked a file that may be unsafe message:

Smart App Control blocks apps and binaries that are identified as unsafe, or that are unknown and unsigned.
If Microsoft’s security service cannot make a confident safety prediction and the file does not have a valid signature, the file is treated as untrusted and can be blocked.
Smart App Control may also automatically turn off on devices used by corporate users or developers if it determines the feature is not a good fit.

To check whether Smart App Control is enabled and what mode it is in:

Go to Settings > Windows Security > App and Browser Control.
If On is selected, it is in enforcement mode.
If Evaluation is selected, it is in evaluation mode.
If Off is selected, it is not running on the device.

If Smart App Control is blocking something related to Insider checks, review the Windows Insider settings first, then confirm Smart App Control status in App and Browser Control.
