Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
This usually happens when an existing Office LTSC or another Office installation is still present, or when the wrong installer/license is being applied.
Try this in order:
- Remove existing Office installations Use the Microsoft uninstall troubleshooter to remove Microsoft 365, Office 2021, Office 2019, or Office 2016 from the PC, then restart the device.
- Install Microsoft 365 again from the correct account After restart, sign in with the account associated with the Microsoft 365 subscription and select Install.
- Check whether the subscription actually includes desktop apps If the subscription is Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Office 365 Enterprise E1, Office 365 A1, Project Online Essentials, or Visio Online Plan 1, there are no desktop Office apps to install. Those plans provide web apps instead.
- If the PC shows account or license mismatch symptoms If Office was previously linked to a different Office plan, Office can show Account Notice or Unlicensed product messages. In that case, uninstall the old version and reinstall the version that comes with the current Microsoft 365 plan.
- If installation still fails or behaves unexpectedly
- Restart the device and try the install again.
- Use the offline installer, which can help bypass proxy, firewall, antivirus, or Internet connection issues.
- If Microsoft 365 features are missing after install If there was previously a non-genuine Office or Microsoft 365 installation, subscription features such as Dictate, Designer, and Editor may not appear until that issue is resolved.
If the goal is specifically to stop Office LTSC from remaining on the device, the key step is to fully remove the existing Office installation first, then reinstall Microsoft 365 using the subscription account that includes the desktop apps.
