I want to be able to preview upcoming Windows updates. How do I join the Windows Insider Program? I've searched for info and only found very general info which did not help me.

    Hi Randy Martin,

You can register through the official Windows Insider Program website using your Microsoft account. Once registration is complete, open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program on your PC, select Get started, and link the same account.

You will then be asked to choose an Insider channel. If you mainly want to preview upcoming Windows updates while keeping the system relatively stable, the Release Preview Channel is generally the least disruptive place to start. The Beta, Dev, and Canary channels provide earlier access to changes but may contain more bugs or unfinished features.

Before enrolling, I recommend backing up any important files, since Insider builds are pre-release software and may occasionally cause stability or compatibility issues. It is also better to avoid using a critical work or primary computer for the less stable channels.

If Windows Insider Program is missing or unavailable in Settings, could you confirm whether the PC is running Windows 10 or Windows 11, and whether the account has administrator permissions? Thank you so much for your understanding.

To join the Windows Insider Program and start previewing upcoming Windows updates:

    1. Register for the program with a Microsoft account on the Windows Insider website. A work account can also be used through Windows Insider Program for Business.
    2. On the Windows device, go to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program.
    3. If prompted, enable optional diagnostic data: select Open Diagnostics & feedback and turn Send optional diagnostic data to On.
    4. Return to Windows Insider Program settings and select Get started.
    5. Link the same account that was used to register, then select Continue.
    6. Choose an Insider channel.
    7. Review and accept the Program Agreement and Privacy Statement.
    8. Select Restart now or Restart later to complete setup.
    9. After restarting, go to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates to download and install the latest Insider Preview build for the selected channel.

    Important notes:

    • The device must be running a licensed version of Windows 11.
    • Administrator access is required on the device to see and change Windows Insider Program settings.
    • The device will restart during setup, so work should be saved first.
    • If switching from one Insider channel to another later, a clean install of Windows might be required.
