Why is Office 2021 for Mac trying to force use of my Office 365 license instead of Office 2021 license?

I have used MS Office Home and Business 2021 for Mac for several years. I am currently running MacOS Monterey (12.7.6) and my version of Office is 16.89

Office somehow deactivated itself (apps asked for activation). This happened shortly after AutoUpdater tried and failed to update Outlook (I don't actually use Outlook, so that is no concern to me).

I uninstalled and reinstalled Office. Somehow, Office attached itself to my Office 365 license instead of the perpetual 2021 license that I want to use. I only use the Office 365 license on virtual machines and use perpetual licenses on all of my "real" machines.

So, I tried the following...

  1. I ran the Microsoft Office License Removal tool.
  2. Reinstalled Office
  3. Launched MS Word. It asked to activate and asked me to sign into my Microsoft account. When I did I was shown a list licenses that are available in my account. I chose Home and Business 2021 for Mac and activation worked. When I selected "About Word" it said it is licensed as Home and Business 2021 for Mac. HOWEVER, after I quit Word and relaunched it, the "About Word" message box shows it is using my Office 365 license now. If I launch other Office apps, such as Excel, they are also shown as using an Office 365 license. I went through the process again and got the same results.

So, Office is (for some reason) forcing the use of my Office 365 license instead of the perpetual Office Home and Business 2021 for Mac license that I want to use.

How do I fix this?

Here is what I did to fix this

  1. Ran License Removal Tool
  2. Launched Word and activated, selecting the "Office Home and Business 2021 Mac" license
  3. "About Word" dialog shows the Office 2021 license being used (not the Office 365 license).
  4. IMMEDIATELY Quit Word and REBOOTED computer
  5. Office apps show the Office 2021 license being used (even after multiple quits and re-launching of apps)

    Since both licenses are tied to the same Microsoft account, Office can automatically select the Microsoft 365 subscription after restarting. Perpetual activation also depends on the macOS licensing helper, so a damaged or outdated helper may prevent the Office 2021 choice from being retained.

    Besides the solutions provided by the Q&A Assist, here are some suggestions you can try: 

    Quit every Office app, including OneNote and Outlook.

    Download and reinstall the latest Office licensing helper, then restart the Mac. The helper provides device-wide activation for perpetual licenses such as Office Home & Business 2021.

    Open Word, sign out of the Microsoft 365 identity shown in the app, quit Word completely with Command + Q, and reopen it.

    Activate again and choose Office Home & Business 2021. Avoid signing the Microsoft 365 account back into Office afterward if it is a different account, because that sign-in may apply its subscription license again.

    If both products belong to the same account and Office still changes licenses, contact Microsoft Support and request an activation review for the Office 2021 device binding. This likely needs an account-side correction rather than another reinstall.
