A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
For a new Word document, AutoSave cannot turn on immediately until the file has been saved to a cloud location such as OneDrive or SharePoint. A new blank file does not yet have a save path, so that behavior is expected.
For the Wi‑Fi/connectivity message:
- Save the new document to OneDrive first from inside Word.
- AutoSave works for files stored in OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, or SharePoint Online.
- If the file is only local or has not been saved yet, AutoSave stays off.
- Open the file from within Word, not from Files/Finder/recent list.
- AutoSave may stay off if the file was opened from File Explorer, Finder, or a recent files list.
- Close the file and reopen it from the Word app itself.
- On iOS, open the file, tap the 3 dots, and check the AutoSave slider.
- If the file is already cloud-saved but AutoSave still fails, check for common blockers:
- the file is in an older format such as .doc
- sync is paused
- the file is embedded inside another Microsoft 365 file
- If Word shows upload or connection problems while editing, leave Word open. For Upload Pending, Word retries saving in the background when AutoSave is on.
- If the issue appears only when trying to save, copy/paste, or create recovery files in Office for Mac, Microsoft’s documented first step is to install the latest Office update from Help > Check for Updates.
If the problem is specifically that new documents should start with AutoSave already on before the first save, that is not supported. AutoSave turns on after the file is saved to a supported cloud location.
