Anytime I try to turn on auto save for a new document or create a new file it says there is a problem and that I need to check my wifi connection. My app is up to date and my wifi is connected and working.

    Dear Jenkins, Thomas,

I understand how frustrating this issue can be, especially when Word reports a network connection error even though your internet connection appears to be working normally.

Although the message references your Wi‑Fi connection, the issue may be related to Word's connection to OneDrive, Office sign-in, or AutoSave services rather than the network itself.

To help isolate the cause, could you please provide the following information?

    1. May I confirm whether you are using Word on Windows, Mac, or iOS? I noticed that your post is tagged with iOS. If you are using an iOS device (such as an iPad or iPhone), could you please let me know whether you experience the same issue on other devices or when accessing Word on the web?
    2. Does the issue occur when creating a new document enabling AutoSave?
    3. If possible, please take a screenshot of the issue you're experiencing and share it with me.

In the meantime, please try the following troubleshooting steps:

    1.Verify your OneDrive status

    • Open the OneDrive application.
    • Confirm that you are signed in with the correct account.
    • Ensure OneDrive shows that it is syncing normally and does not display any errors.

2.Sign out and back into Office

    • Open Word.
    • Navigate to File > Account.
    • Select Sign Out.
    • Close all Office applications.
    • Restart your device.
    • Reopen Word and sign back in with your Microsoft account.

    3.Test saving a document locally

    • Create a new blank document.
    • Select File > Save As.
    • Choose a local folder such as Documents on your computer.
    • Check whether the file saves successfully.

If local saving works, the issue may be related to OneDrive or cloud synchronization then please check (these steps below apply only to the affected Windows device. If the affected device is only your iOS device, you may disregard the two troubleshooting steps):

    1.Run an Office repair:

    • Close all Office applications.
    • Open Windows Settings > Apps > Installed Apps.
    • Locate Microsoft 365 or Office.
    • Select Modify.
    • Run Quick Repair first.
    • If the issue persists, run Online Repair.
    • For reference: Repair an Office application

    2.Test Word in Safe Mode

If the issue does not occur in Safe Mode, an Office add-in may be causing the problem.

    Check for Office updates

    • Go to File > Account.
    • Select Update Options > Update Now.
    • Install any available updates and restart Word.

If the issue persists after you have completed the troubleshooting steps above, please share the results with me and provide your responses to the questions outlined above.

Thank you for your cooperation, and I look forward to your update.

For a new Word document, AutoSave cannot turn on immediately until the file has been saved to a cloud location such as OneDrive or SharePoint. A new blank file does not yet have a save path, so that behavior is expected.

    For the Wi‑Fi/connectivity message:

    1. Save the new document to OneDrive first from inside Word.
      • AutoSave works for files stored in OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, or SharePoint Online.
      • If the file is only local or has not been saved yet, AutoSave stays off.
    2. Open the file from within Word, not from Files/Finder/recent list.
      • AutoSave may stay off if the file was opened from File Explorer, Finder, or a recent files list.
      • Close the file and reopen it from the Word app itself.
    3. On iOS, open the file, tap the 3 dots, and check the AutoSave slider.
    4. If the file is already cloud-saved but AutoSave still fails, check for common blockers:
      • the file is in an older format such as .doc
      • sync is paused
      • the file is embedded inside another Microsoft 365 file
    5. If Word shows upload or connection problems while editing, leave Word open. For Upload Pending, Word retries saving in the background when AutoSave is on.
    6. If the issue appears only when trying to save, copy/paste, or create recovery files in Office for Mac, Microsoft’s documented first step is to install the latest Office update from Help > Check for Updates.

If the problem is specifically that new documents should start with AutoSave already on before the first save, that is not supported. AutoSave turns on after the file is saved to a supported cloud location.
