A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Hello,
From the screenshot, it looks like Word on your iPad is opening correctly, but the banner says:
"This account does not allow editing on your device. For an account with full access, contact your organization about your subscription plan."
Based on what I can see, this does not necessarily mean you need to buy a laptop. Since you are using a school-provided Microsoft 365 subscription, the more likely cause is that the account currently signed in on the iPad does not have the license or permissions required for editing in the Office mobile apps.
1/ What Microsoft 365 subscription does your school provide (for example, Microsoft 365 A1, A3, or A5)?
You can kindly ask your school's IT administrator if you are unsure.
2/ Might I reconfirm whether the screenshot was taken while you were using Word on your iPad, or on a different device? Also, are you signed in to Word using your school email address?
In the screenshot, I can still see the "Sign in" button rather than a profile picture, which may indicate that Word is not currently signed in.
3/ Can you edit documents when you open Word in a web browser and sign in at https://word.cloud.microsoft/?
4/ Does the same message appear in Excel and PowerPoint, or only in Word?
For your reference:
Some Microsoft 365 Education accounts include access to Office on the web only:

I hope I've been able to help in some way. Please keep me posted
