If the goal is to have Exchange contacts available in Outlook on iPhone and in the iPhone Contacts app, use an Exchange-based account and enable contact sync in the Outlook app.
- Make sure the account is not using IMAP or POP. IMAP and POP can sync email only, not contacts or calendar. The account must be added as Exchange or Exchange ActiveSync.
- In Outlook for iPhone, turn on contact sync. Go to Outlook app > Settings > select the Exchange account > Save Contacts. When Save Contacts is enabled on iOS, new contacts and edits made in Outlook are saved to the device Contacts app.
- Allow Outlook to access contacts in iPhone settings. Go to Settings > Outlook and make sure Contacts is turned on. It is also recommended to turn on Background App Refresh.
- Verify the account is syncing in Outlook. In the Outlook app, go to Calendar and open the left menu. Under the email accounts list, confirm the account appears there. If the address does not appear, it may not be set up using Exchange ActiveSync and should be removed and added again as Exchange.
- If contacts still do not sync, reset the account in Outlook. Go to Outlook app > Settings > tap the account that is not syncing > Reset Account.
- If reset does not help, delete and re-add the account. In Outlook app > Settings > tap the account > Delete Account > Delete From This Device, then add it again as Exchange or Exchange ActiveSync.
Important limitation: edits made directly in the iPhone Contacts app are not saved back to Outlook for iOS and Android. Contacts added or edited in Outlook sync to the device when Save Contacts is enabled.
If the account keeps prompting for IMAP setup, the mail provider may not support contact sync through Exchange, and that account will not sync contacts.
