Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
Try this in order:
- Update Office first
- Open any Office app.
- Go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
- Let the update finish, then test Excel again.
- Start Excel in Safe Mode to check add-ins
- Open Run from the Start menu.
- Type
excel /safeand start Excel. - If Excel works normally in Safe Mode, an add-in is likely causing the crash.
- In Excel, go to File > Options > Add-ins.
- In the Manage list, disable the add-ins, then test again.
- Run an Office repair
- Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the Office product.
- Choose Change.
- Run Quick Repair first.
- If the problem continues, run Online Repair. This reinstalls Office more completely and is the better option when the app keeps closing after the built-in “Repair Now” prompt.
- Check Windows updates and drivers
- Open Windows Update and install available updates.
- If the issue continues, update device drivers, especially video card, printer, mouse, and keyboard drivers.
- Test the file itself
Since the problem happens when opening a file sent by a teacher, the file may be damaged.
- In Excel, go to File > Open > Browse.
- Select the file.
- Click the arrow next to Open.
- Choose Open and Repair.
- If only that workbook crashes Excel
The workbook may contain content that causes performance or crash issues, such as:
- formulas referencing entire columns
- excessive styles
- many hidden objects or shapes
- invalid defined names If possible, test with a different Excel file. If other files open normally, the issue is likely with that specific workbook.
