Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
Hi Z,
Thank you for sharing the details of your situation.
I understand that Excel displays an error when you open the file sent by your teacher, and although selecting Repair Now allows you to use Excel temporarily, the application closes again after approximately seven minutes.
To assist you more effectively, could you please provide the following information?
- What is the exact error message displayed? If possible, please share a screenshot after removing any personal or sensitive information.
- Does the issue occur only with the file sent by your teacher, or does Excel also close when you open other workbooks or create a blank workbook?
- Did you download the file to your computer before opening it, or are you opening it directly from an email, Teams, OneDrive, or a web browser?
- Can you open and edit the same file successfully in Excel for the web?
- Which version of Windows and Microsoft Excel are you currently using?
In the meantime, here are some steps you can try:
- Save a copy of the file to a local folder, such as Documents, and open that copy instead of opening it directly from the original source.
- Open Excel first, select File > Open > Browse, select the affected workbook, click the arrow next to Open, and then choose Open and Repair > Repair.
- Test Excel in Safe Mode by pressing Windows key + R, entering
excel /safe, and selecting OK. Then open the file again. If Excel remains open in Safe Mode, an Excel or COM add-in may be causing the problem.
- To disable add-ins, open Excel normally, go to File > Options > Add-ins, select COM Add-ins from the Manage drop-down menu, and click Go. Clear all selected add-ins, click OK, and then restart Excel and test the file again.
- If the issue is resolved, re-enable the add-ins one at a time to identify the problematic one.
- Please also check for Office updates by opening Excel and selecting File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
- If the issue occurs with multiple files, you may repair Microsoft 365 from Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft 365 > Modify, starting with Quick Repair.
- If that does not resolve the issue, try Online Repair.
-
- Please note that Online Repair requires an internet connection and may require you to sign in again afterward.
Please let me know the results in the comment below, particularly whether the same issue occurs with other Excel files and whether the affected file works in Excel for the web. This will help me determine whether the problem is associated with the individual workbook or the Excel installation.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
