My computer no longer accepts my pin or my Microsoft password. A Microsoft security update caused my pin to no longer be accepted. When I try to change the pin I get the message that the process did not work. But when I try to troubleshoot, open in a safe mode, or try anything that requires my Microsoft password it does not accept my password. I've tried changing my password on multiple occasions and that has mot worked.

2026-09-01T17:10:58.7366667+00:00 More specific information. The error message I get on start-up: "Your PIN is no longer available due to a change to the security settings on this device. Click to set up your PIN again." When I click on "Set up my PIN" it takes me to either of the following: (a) a security setting that asks me to enter my Microsoft password. When I enter my password it does not accept my current password. (b) a page where it warns me that changing my PIN may cause me to loose my connections. Once I click to continue it tries to take me to a page to change my PIN but it ultimately returns the response that it could not change my PIN at this time and that I should retry later.

2026-09-02T02:55:38.8933333+00:00 Thanks! Your BIOS was likely updated along with Windows and may have been reset, causing this issue, or it was a side effect of that specific update. Try these other solutions:
Point Recovery If the problem persists, try to restore your PC to a previous point.
- Hold down the SHIFT key and restart your computer in the Lock Screen.
- Hold SHIFT until you access the Recovery Screen
NOTE: If the computer cannot access Windows, before turning on the device, press the F8 key until it enters the Recovery Mode (do not stop pressing the key until you enter the option).
- Some manufacturers can change this key, such as SHIFT, ESC, F11, F12.
- Also try holding the key (do not stop holding the key until you enter the option).
- Try holding the WINDOWS key and the On/Off button, and when the computer starts, release them.
- In Recovery Mode, select Troubleshooting > System Restore
- Scroll through the Restore Window until you reach the available Restore Points > Choose the latest > Advance the options.
Uninstall Updates
- In Recovery Mode, select Troubleshooting > Uninstall Updates.
- Choose the "Uninstall Latest Quality Update" option.
- If the problem persists, go back to the Menu and choose the "Uninstall Latest Feature Update" option.
