Azure for Students – VM Deployment Blocked by Subscription Restriction

In the list you can verify which regions are allowed for deployments in your Azure Subscription:

In the "Parameter value" of "allowedLocations" are the available Azure regions listed for your resources.

Regarding the VM series availability:

Since the beginning of July 2026, Azure VM SKU series v1 through v4 have been subject to certain capacity or availability restrictions.

Instead of using v1 - v4 Azure VM SKU series it is recommended to select v5, v6, and v7 VM series: Migration recommendations

1. Verify Allowed Deployment Regions
   • Azure for Students subscriptions are limited to specific Azure regions.
   • In the Azure portal, navigate to Azure Policy > Assignments and review the Allowed resource deployment regions policy.
   • Confirm that the selected region appears in the allowedLocations parameter.
2. Check VM Family Availability
   • Even within an allowed region, certain VM series may not be available for Azure for Students subscriptions.
   • Microsoft has introduced capacity and availability restrictions for some VM SKU families, and availability can vary by region.
   • If possible, test with commonly available B-series VM sizes in an approved region.
3. Review Subscription Quotas
   • Navigate to Subscriptions > Usage + quotas and verify:
   • Total Regional vCPU quota
   • VM family quota for the selected VM size
   • If either quota is exhausted or unavailable, VM deployment will fail.
4. Check Deployment Configuration
   • Some low-cost VM sizes may not support features such as Trusted Launch, Availability Zones, or other advanced security settings.
   • If enabled, try deploying with:
   • Security Type: Standard
   • Availability Zone: None
   • A basic marketplace image such as Ubuntu Server or Windows Server.
