When I switch from multiple monitors to a single monitor, the taskbar loses all the windows

When I have my laptop docked, I am connected to two additional monitors which I use alongside my laptop screen. My taskbars are set up to display only the windows on the monitor of the taskbar where the window is open. When I disconnect from the dock e.g. to go to a meeting, all the windows move to the laptop screen, but the taskbar there becomes empty; it doesn't even contain the windows that were on the laptop screen. I then have to go to Taskbar Settings and toggle Automatically hide the taskbar on and off to get them back. Is there a way to fix this?

This looks like a Windows Explorer/taskbar refresh issue when the display configuration changes, rather than the windows themselves being lost.

When it happens, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, find Windows Explorer in Task Manager, right-click it and select Restart. This should refresh the taskbar without having to toggle auto-hide.

As a workaround, you can also go to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors and temporarily change When using multiple displays, show my taskbar apps on to All taskbars, then test disconnecting the dock again.

If the issue continues even with Windows fully updated, I would recommend reporting it through Feedback Hub, as the taskbar is not refreshing correctly after the monitors are disconnected.

Have the exact same issue since months.
I want to have my apps displayed on the display it is open on, otherwise it's very hard to navigate, so setting it to "All taskbars" is not a fix.

I can also hide and unhide the taskbar, and that re-renders it,but seriously, this needs to be fixed.

A supported workaround is to force Windows to render only on the laptop display after undocking:

Press Windows key + P.
Select PC screen only.

This can help when the taskbar is still behaving as if another display is active after switching from multiple monitors.

Also verify the taskbar behavior settings:

Right-click the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
Expand Taskbar behaviors.
Confirm Automatically hide the taskbar is unchecked.
If the device is a 2-in-1, turn off Optimize taskbar for touch interactions when this device is used as a tablet. This setting has been identified as a cause of the taskbar hiding unexpectedly.

If the taskbar still appears empty after disconnecting, toggling Automatically hide the taskbar off and on is a valid workaround based on the described behavior, but the context does not provide a permanent fix beyond the display-mode and taskbar-behavior checks above.
