If Windows 10 is signed in with a Microsoft account, change the Microsoft account display name:

1. Sign in to the Microsoft account.
2. Select Edit name.
3. Make the name change and select Save.
4. Allow up to 24 hours for the name to update everywhere.

That display name is used when signing in, appears on Windows devices signed in with that Microsoft account, and is the name shown in places such as email and Outlook.com groups.

If the PC is using a local account, the accepted Microsoft Q&A guidance is:

1. Press Windows + R.
2. Type netplwiz and select OK.
3. Select the user account and choose Properties.
4. In Full name, enter the name to show on the lock or welcome screen.
5. Select Apply and OK.
6. Sign out and sign back in, or restart the PC.

If the name was changed online and Windows still shows the old name for a while, that delay is normal. Changing the Microsoft account name does not change the user folder name under C:\Users.
