If OneDrive was full, documents stored there can open as read-only and may not save until the account is back under the storage limit. On Mac, sync can also continue failing until the OneDrive account is refreshed.

    Try this in order:

    1. Confirm the storage upgrade has applied
      • Open OneDrive on the web and check the storage shown for the account.
      • If the account still shows full, storage changes can take time to update after purchase.
    2. Check whether the file is opening read-only because OneDrive was full
      • If the file is stored in OneDrive and storage is full, the document cannot be saved until the account is under its allotted space.
      • In OneDrive, use Manage storage to check free space.
    3. Free space if the account still shows full
      • Sign in to OneDrive.
      • Open Manage your OneDrive storage or the Storage used area.
      • Review what is taking space.
      • Delete files no longer needed.
      • Empty the Recycle Bin because Recycle Bin items count toward OneDrive storage.
      • If a shared folder pushed the account over quota, remove that shared folder from OneDrive.
    4. Re-link OneDrive on the Mac to fix the sync issue
      • Click the OneDrive cloud icon in the Mac menu bar.
      • Select Help & Settings > Preferences.
      • Open the Account tab.
      • Select Unlink this Mac.
      • Then use Spotlight to open OneDrive again and sign in.
      • When prompted that a folder already exists, select Use this folder.
      • OneDrive will sync files and folders back to the Mac. This can take some time.
    5. If sync still does not work, clear cached OneDrive sign-in credentials on Mac
      • Open Keychain Access from Spotlight.
      • Search for OneDrive.
      • Delete OneDrive Cached Credential.
      • Start OneDrive again and sign in.
    6. If the files still will not open normally
      • Restart the Mac.
      • Install Office updates.
      • Perform an Online repair of Office.
      • Check the internet connection.

    Important details:

    • If OneDrive storage is exceeded, new files cannot upload, edit, or sync, and existing files remain read-only.
    • After 6 months over quota, OneDrive files may be deleted and are non-recoverable.

If the storage purchase still has not reflected and the account continues to show full, use Contact Microsoft Support for personal accounts.
