Every time I open edge it shows a white screen with a search bar but before it showed a full screen with news and other aspects

So, in all honesty, I accidentally downloaded something sketchy and it messed up my laptop for a bit, but I uninstalled it now, but it still hasn't fixed the initial opening of edge and now it just looks so weird. Basically, if you ever used a Chromebook every time you open chrome it took you to the main search screen and that's what edge did but not it doesn't even if the sketchy app is uninstalled and I need a little bit of help.

Best regards, Eddie.Screenshot 2026-08-30 194444

The behavior shown is consistent with Edge opening but not rendering the normal start page correctly. Since a sketchy app was previously installed, use this order of fixes:

    1. Scan for malware first
On Windows 10 or Windows 11, run a manual scan from Windows Security. This is important because browser startup and page behavior can remain affected after the app itself is removed.
    2. Restart the PC
Restart Windows, then open Edge again. A background process can keep causing Edge problems until the system is restarted.
    3. Make sure Edge is up to date
In Edge, go to Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge.
If an update is available, install it.
    4. Clear cached browsing data
In Edge, go to Settings and more > History > Open history page > Delete browsing data.
Set Time range to All time, select Browsing history and Cached images and files, then select Clear now.
    5. If that does not help, clear all browsing data
Go to Settings and more > History > Open history page > Delete browsing data.
Choose All time, select all boxes, then select Clear now.
    6. Repair Microsoft Edge
This is the strongest supported fix when Edge opens incorrectly, crashes, or does not behave normally.
      • Close Edge completely.
      • Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
      • Select Microsoft Edge > Modify.
      • If prompted, select Yes.
      • Stay connected to the internet and select Repair.
Browser data and settings should not be affected.
    7. If Modify is unavailable
That usually means Edge was installed and is being managed by an organization. In that case, contact the system administrator.

If Edge still opens to a blank or broken page after these steps, use Settings and more > Help and feedback > Send feedback.

    Hi,

That does not look like Edge new tab page. There must be an app or an extension that replaces it. First, I would suggest you run a manual scan using Windows Security as suggested from the AI response. Open Windows Security, go to Virus & threat protection > Scan options. Select Full scan then proceed to clicking Scan now.

If the results did not detect anything, can you click the puzzle piece icon next to the star icon in the address bar and check whether there is an unknown extension installed?
