Try this in order for an intermittent black screen at power-on in Windows 11:
- Check the simple display causes first.
- If external displays are connected, disconnect them.
- Make sure the device is charged or plugged in.
- If using an external monitor, verify the cable is secure and the monitor is powered on.
- Reset the graphics driver.
- Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B.
- A beep or screen flicker indicates the reset worked.
- Cycle the display output.
- Press Windows + P, then press P again and press Enter to cycle display modes.
- This helps if Windows is sending video to the wrong display.
- Try the security screen.
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Del.
- If the security screen appears, open Task Manager and restart Windows Explorer.
- If Windows Explorer is not listed, use File > Run new task, type
explorer.exe, and press Enter.
- Force restart if the screen stays black.
- Press and hold the power button for 20 seconds.
- If the problem keeps happening, boot into Safe Mode and check the display driver.
- Force shutdown by holding the power button for 10 seconds.
- Repeat this 2–3 times until Windows enters Recovery Mode.
- Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Press F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
- Open Device Manager > Display adapters.
- Right-click the GPU and choose Update driver.
- If the issue started after a driver update, choose Roll back driver instead.
- If the issue started recently, use System Restore.
- In Recovery Mode, go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the black screen issue began.
- If the screen is black after sign-in with a mouse cursor visible, check the shell setting.
- Warning: this requires editing the registry. Incorrect changes can cause serious system problems.
- Press Windows + R, type
regedit, and press Enter. - Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon. - Verify the Shell value is
explorer.exe.
For a more permanent fix, focus on the driver path first: Safe Mode, then update or roll back the graphics driver depending on when the issue started. If the black screen happens before Windows loads, hardware connection checks and Safe Mode/Recovery steps are the supported path.
