I have a SAMS training project that requires me to use dialogue boxes in Word instead of the shortcuts on Mac but I can’t find where to unsimplify my ribbon. I have tried to find it under preferences and watched a tutorial but it won’t work. I need help

Dear @Avery Ferreira,

I hope you’re having a good day.

If you're trying to complete a SAMS assignment and need to use the full Word interface, the first thing to know is that recent versions of Word for Mac no longer include an "Unsimplified Ribbon" option in the same way that Word for Windows does.

To make sure you're seeing the full ribbon available on Mac:

  1. Open Microsoft Word.
  2. Select View on the menu bar.
  3. Make sure Ribbon is enabled. Screenshot 2026-08-30 at 12.33.36
  4. Alternatively, go to Word > Preferences > Ribbon & Toolbar and ensure the main tabs are enabled. Screenshot 2026-08-30 at 12.36.50

If you still cannot find the dialog box launchers shown in your SAMS instructions, this may be because the assignment was written for Word on Windows. Many of the small dialog box launcher arrows that appear in Windows do not exist in the same location, or at all, in Word for Mac.

In Word for Mac, you can usually access the same dialog boxes from the menu bar:

  • Format > Font for the Font dialog box
  • Format > Paragraph for the Paragraph dialog box
  • Format > Tabs for the Tabs dialog box
  • File > Page Setup for the Page Setup dialog box Screenshot 2026-08-30 at 12.39.10

These open the same settings that SAMS assignments often require, even if the launcher arrow is not visible on the ribbon.

I hope this information helps point you in the right direction. If you run into any issues while trying the steps, or if something still doesn’t feel quite right, please don’t hesitate to reach out again. I’ll do my best to support you however I can.

Looking forward to hearing back from you with any updates or additional details.

Warm regards,
